I tried it with my hangout data, and it works as advertised. If you choose the right options you can get your hangout rendered as a single HTML page, complete with pictures and text. If you save the page then you'll have your own copy.
One nice thing: it gives you a way to jump to any date, something that would be nice in the Google version of Hangouts. I mean, how hard would that be?
