A pit in my stomach

I've heard people (mainly my kids) use this phrase. But the way I learned it is: "I have a <some description of a bad feeling> in the pit of my stomach."

According to this post from a site called "Language Log" the phrase "a pit in my stomach" appears in about 5% of their citations. 

The fact that it's used even that often gives me a pit in my stomach.
