John Boyd and the OODA Loop

I found out about John Boyd by reading Venkat Rao’s “Be Slightly Evil” and Ribbon Farm posts. I haven’t seen one in a while. Wonder what’s up with that.

Anyhow! Today I went surfing and refreshed my memory on the topic.

Here’s a Wikipedia article on the OODA loop. And here’s one about Boyd.

Boyd’s notion is that competitive activities are won or lost based on one’s ability to Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act faster than one’s opponent, and by using that speed to disrupt the opponent’s own OODA loop.

Boyd’s approach has become standard doctrine in the U.S. Marines and has been applied to many business areas as well.
